Bats the source of Pandemic

A big hypothesis on where the virus came from was not updated by the mission to Wuhan. Scientists assume that the most possible carriers are bats and that they passed it on to another species that passed it on to humans. Although there are other scenarios, for example, a bat may have directly bitten a person, the path by a second species, according to the WHO team and its Chinese colleagues, remains the most plausible possibility. The Huanan Seafood Market

At the beginning of the epidemic, the Huanan Seafood Market had a cluster of cases and was originally accused of being the location where people were first affected. The hypothesis has all but been ruled out with the discovery of prior events, but researchers also want to know how this early cluster occurred.



The market dealt primarily with frozen fish, but domestic animal species were also sold. This included rabbits, believed to be resistant to the virus, and alleged susceptible bamboo rats and ferret badgers. One team member said that some of these species have been tracked to farms or dealers in regions that are home to bats that bear the virus that is the nearest recognized relative to the one that triggers COVID-19 at the closing news conference of the WHO project Tuesday.

An infected individual may have brought the virus to the market. Chinese health officials mention that only virus-positive surfaces on the market have been checked, not any of the animal products. A Chinese official said there seemed to be cases elsewhere in Wuhan at the same time as the business cluster, so the spread of the virus from animals to humans may have occurred elsewhere.

Wuhan Institute of Virology: The Lab

International specialists have concluded that the virus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a laboratory with a large range of virus samples, is pretty unlikely. In making its decision, the team said such leaks are exceedingly rare and there is no proof
that when the pandemic started, the virus occurred in that laboratory or any laboratory elsewhere in the world. It also checked the institute’s safety procedures, leading the team to conclude that “it was very unlikely that anything could escape from such a place,” said Peter Ben Embarek, WHO team leader. Cold Chain

The joint investigation left open the possibility that through frozen food goods the virus may have spread to humans, a bit of a surprise as international experts have usually played down the chance. Chinese authorities, who have found the virus on imported frozen food packages and seized on it to indicate that the virus may have come to China from abroad, have widely supported this hypothesis.

WHO team member Marion Koopmans noticed that the question of where the virus initially originated from would still not be resolved. She said at the airport, “It’s not the cold chain itself, it can’t be that.” “Somewhere, the virus has to come from.”
